Exposure to asbestos particles leads to a dreaded disease called Mesothelioma.It is a form of cancer affecting lungs, abdomen and the heart. It is a fatal disease and has no cure till date.The most pathetic aspect of the disease is the time gap between exposure to asbestos and the onset of mesothelioma which is as long as 20 to 30 years.By the time the victims develop symptoms of coughing up blood, troubled breathing, it is often mistaken for pneumonia. Only an expert physician treating cancer will be in a position to identify the disease.Factors such as duration of exposure, intensity of asbestos particles exposed to, shape, size and chemical elements of the bundle of fibers determine the level of damage caused by these fibers in the body of the victim. The longer these particles remain in the alveolar region the more toxic it becomes, wider the particles inhaled lesser the damage.People at workplaces namely shipyards, construction sites, mining and manufacturing plants are normally exposed to asbestos particles for a longer period of time and are hence prone to greater chances of occurrence of mesothelioma.Initially when mining activities where started, there were no reports of deaths. Few decades later as many as 85 deaths were reported, the root cause being asbestos exposure.Secondary or indirect exposure to these particles takes place when worker carry asbestos particles in their clothing and there are many cases where mothers and children were very badly affected by this cancer.While the main reason behind contracting mesothelioma being exposure to asbestos, people who use tobacco or smoke cigarette double their risk of contracting mesothelioma cancer.
